ENGINEERING WEIGHT & LOGISTICS MANUAL

Concrete Block Weight Chart

Knowing individual CMU unit weights, core-fill grout weight, and loaded pallet weights is essential for structural foundation calculations, crane rigging, highway transportation logistics, and avoiding dangerous pickup truck axle overloads. This guide covers ASTM C90 density classes, pallet weights, and payload safety rules.

1. ASTM C90 Density Classifications

The standard governing concrete masonry units across North America is ASTM C90. Concrete blocks are engineered in three distinct density tiers, which determines their dead weight:

  • Lightweight Units (Density < 105 lbs/cu ft): Made with synthetic expanded shale, slate, clay, or pumice. Weighing roughly 28 lbs per standard 8-inch unit, they significantly reduce ergonomic strain on masons and offer superior thermal insulation (higher R-value).
  • Medium-Weight Units (Density 105 to 125 lbs/cu ft): Manufactured using a combination of natural sand and manufactured lightweight aggregate. Strikes an optimal balance of structural strength and handling comfort.
  • Normal-Weight Units (Density ≥ 125 lbs/cu ft): Made with standard crushed gravel, limestone, and sand. Delivering exceptional compressive strength, moisture durability, and superior acoustic sound attenuation (high STC ratings).

2. Grout Core-Fill Weight Addition

When engineering footings or foundation walls, remember that filling block cores with pea-gravel grout (ASTM C476) adds substantial dead load:

  • Empty 8×8×16 Hollow Block: ~38 lbs.
  • Fully Grouted 8×8×16 Block: Adds approximately 45 to 50 lbs of wet grout, bringing the total in-place weight of a single solid-filled block to 85 to 90 lbs!
  • Wall Dead Load: An ungrouted 8-inch block wall weighs approximately 30 lbs/sq ft. A fully solid-grouted wall weighs 75 to 80 lbs/sq ft.

3. Vehicle Payload & Hauling Guide

Do not confuse a truck's Towing Capacity with its Payload Capacity. A truck rated to tow 10,000 lbs can typically carry only 1,500 to 2,000 lbs in its truck bed:

Safe Hauling Thresholds (Standard 8-Inch Hollow CMU):

  • 1/2-Ton Pickup (F-150 / Silverado 1500 / Ram 1500): Payload is usually 1,600–2,000 lbs. Safe limit is 40 to 45 blocks (~1/2 pallet).
  • 3/4-Ton Pickup (F-250 / Silverado 2500): Payload is 3,000–3,800 lbs. Safe limit is 75 to 85 blocks (1 full pallet).
  • 1-Ton Pickup (F-350 / 3500 Single Rear Wheel): Payload is 4,000–4,800 lbs. Safe limit is 100 to 115 blocks.
  • Dual-Axle Utility Trailer (7,000 lb GVWR): Net payload is ~4,800 lbs. Capable of carrying 1 to 1.5 pallets (100–120 blocks) when centered over trailer axles.
