How many concrete blocks per square foot?
Check the 1.125 factor, compare wall areas and keep base quantities separate from order allowances.
For a nominal 16 × 8 inch installed face, use 1.125 full-block equivalents per square foot before openings and waste. That factor belongs to this face size. It is not a rule for every masonry product.
Where the factor comes from
One face has 16 × 8 = 128 square inches. Divide by 144 to convert to square feet: 128 ÷ 144 = 8/9 ft². Invert that coverage to find the count per square foot: 1 ÷ (8/9) = 1.125.
Order count = round up [net wall area in ft² × 1.125 × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)]
Subtract openings first, apply your allowance to the unrounded block equivalents, and round up once at the end. For a different nominal face, replace 1.125 with 144 ÷ (length in inches × height in inches).
Quick area check
| Net wall area | Base equivalents | Whole blocks, 10% extra |
|---|---|---|
| 50 ft² | 56.25 | 62 |
| 100 ft² | 112.5 | 124 |
| 160 ft² | 180 | 198 |
| 200 ft² | 225 | 248 |
| 320 ft² | 360 | 396 |
Square metres use matching dimensions
For the 400 × 200 mm nominal preset, coverage is 0.4 × 0.2 = 0.08 m² and the count factor is 12.5 per m². A 10 × 2 m wall therefore needs 250 equivalents before waste or 275 blocks with 10% extra. This preset differs from the US inch module; see nominal and actual block sizes.
Coverage is not a block layout
This calculation treats the wall as an area. Corner details, bond patterns, cuts and specialty units need a separate layout check. If you are measuring several walls, calculate each wall separately and combine their rounded estimates. Do not multiply by two for the two visible sides of the same wall.
Use the opening measurement guide before applying the factor to a wall with doors or windows. Confirm the final order allowance against the actual design and supplier products.
